Product Description
Our Saffron is Some of the Highest Quality Saffron in the World!
The best saffron is found in the regions of Afghanistan or Iran. It comes from a flower called crocus sativus and is extremely labor intensive to harvest since only the tiny threads are what is gathered. The Super Negin grade saffron only uses the very tips of the filament as that is the highest quality with the strongest flavor.
Our dried safran has a beautiful fire red filament coloring with a mild fragrance or smell with an Afghan origin. It is a natural herb, spice, and seasoning that gourmet chefs around the world use as their secret weapon in pan recipes such as desserts, soups, paella rice, basmati rice, stews, and chicken.
Saffron is not more expensive per ounce than gold but Vanilla Bean Kings promises to make it affordable for the every day chef. Sold by the gram or in bulk quantities by weight!

This saffron is superb. You can smell it even before you open the tin. That heavenly scent of saffron... mmmmm. Few saffrons I have worked with compare to the intensity of scent and the depth of color of this one.
When you cook Persian food, you need Persian ingredients. Spanish saffron, fine though it may be, simply will not do. Can you find better saffron out there? Sure. But at this price point? Never.
A friend of mine brings back little containers of saffron from Iran. He gets the good stuff because, if you are going to bring saffron all the way from Iran, you don’t mess around with low quality stuff. Plus, he’s really generous.
Anyway, I have a habit of using a MISERLY amount, just seven or eight threads to color and perfume my chelow. That way, I can use it for a long time. I know, I know, freshness is important too...
I finally ran out of the stuff from Iran (and it honestly had gotten too old because of how stingily I used it), and was pleased with how affordable this product was. What could go wrong? It says “negin”! Even if it’s no good, I’m only out a few bucks. So I thought.
When the plastic bubble wrap bag arrived, I tore it open, and oh my... The bag was filled with that perfume, and it was, so... FRESH. It caught me dead in my tracks, and I just had to close my eyes, and thank God for making such a beautiful world.
I was so excited to make chelow with it. I diligently rinsed, soaked, boiled, and steamed the rice. It was so fluffy and so fragrant all on it’s own. As my nose (and gut) told me that the tahdig was almost ready, I set the kettle to boil. And as I waited for those couple of ounces to get hot, I got my mortar and pestle, and added a tiny pinch of salt. Then, instead of counting seven or eight threads... I just took a pinch. “It’s affordable. And besides, it might not be as strong of color.”
Mind you, it wasn’t like an enormous pinch. If I counted, it would probably have come out to twelve or fifteen threads instead of my usual seven. I ground it up, then put the resultant powder in my little duralex cup, and added the couple of ounces of water, now boiling. And I kid you not - it was DARK ORANGE!! This stuff is so strong!
The rice was finished, so I fluffed it, and scooped out a third of it into a bowl. And as that nutty, buttery, appetite-whetting aroma of basmati steam billowed into my face, I drizzled in the saffron elixir. And, O, that scent... perfume of a thousand flowers, exuding the splendor of golden sun, whose energy at once ancient and fresh...
And as I fluffed those golden grains of rice, I was transported to that place of rugged mountains, gushing streams, rocky flats, and lush plains. God is there in those moments, and you are Home.
And as I came back in my mind to my kitchen, I was faced with the realization that I’m going to need to add more white rice to mix in because what I have before me is not that usual, light yellow color. It’s dark canary yellow, which looks a bit immodest. (For reference, the whole pot had ten cups of rice; a third in the bowl for saffronization would be over three cups worth - not a meager amount!) That tiny pinch ended up coloring two thirds of the rice, not just one third! So it looks like I’m back to counting seven strands.
I am now a lifetime customer. This is the saffron that my children will grow up smelling and will one day dream of coming home to.
And with every use, as that luxuriant scent rises upward, so will go my prayers heavenward for the healing of that beautiful place from which these saffron threads came.
Authenticity test include smelling and evaluating the threads by soaking in water. Fake saffron will do several things that will clearly identify them as fake.
After adding a few threads to some water, the water should be bright yellow and clear while the threads will retain their dark color on the entire thread. Fake saffron will produce a water the is not quite as vibrant but also muddled. For fake, the dye soaks off and the threads start to disintegrate and some of the threads will turn a white color as the dye wears off.
In the pictures, you will see the water is bright yellow and clear. The all of the threads stayed dark and retained their shape. I even took the threads out of the water on one picture to show NO disintegration.
The smell was full and fresh plus it tasted wonderful.
Lastly, you can see in the pictures great quantity. They did not skimp on the product as some places do not pack the full quantity as advertised. That was not the case with this one.
Based on what I received, I highly recommend. You should be able to buy with confidence, that you are receiving, high guality authentic saffron.
