Preheat oven to 375℉. Gather all your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.
Prepare the Ingredients
Using a Chef's knife (or wavy chopping knife) and cutting board, chop 1/2 cup raisins or dried black currantsinto small bits, if desired.
Make the Irish Soda Bread
In a medium mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 2 teaspoons caraway seeds. Mix in chopped raisins.
Create a hole in the center of the mixture and add in 1 cup buttermilk, 1 large egg, and 2 tablespoons butter (melted). Using a dough whisk or fork, stir until moistened. (Your dough will be rather sticky at this point.)
Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, and gently knead 6-8 times, until the dough is easier to work with.
Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Slice a large cross through the center. If desired, sprinkle 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar over the top.
Bake in preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm. Makes one large loaf and serves 10-12 people.

*Unless otherwise indicated, all butter used on this recipe site is salted.**You may substitute dried black currants for the raisins. Or use dried cranberries.
