French Onion Dip has become one of my favorite snacking dips with potato chips. It’s kind of addicting. Made with sweet Vidalia onions, mayonnaise, and a few other ingredients, it’s so much better than store bought or even one made from a mix.
Gather the ingredients so you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.
Prepare the Ingredients
Using a sharp knife and cutting board, thinly slice 3 cups sweet onions.
I opted to leave the onions in slices, but if you want, you may chop them into smaller pieces.
Mince 1 clove garlic. Heat 4 tablespoons butter in a medium to large skillet on medium heat.
Cook the Onions
Add the sliced onion to the melted butter and sauté, stirring often until the onions turn golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes on low.
Assemble the Onion Dip
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, and 1 teaspoon hot sauce. Mix to combine. Season the dip with 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt, 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt, and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Stir together until incorporated.
Add the browned onion to the dip mixture. Using a spatula, stir until the onion is fully incorporated. Transfer the dip to a pretty serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.
Serve French Onion Dip with your favorite potato chips. This recipe serves 6-8 people
I like this dip with a plain ruffled chip, such as Lays.
Refrigerate dip in a tightly covered container for up to 5 days. This dip is also really good as a condiment for baked potatoes.
