French Onion Dip

Featured Image - Recipe for French Onion Dip

French Onion Dip is an appetizer I’ve been working on this past year, and it has become one of my favorite snacking dips with potato chips. It’s kind of addicting, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. Made with sweet Vidalia onions, mayonnaise, and a few other ingredients, it’s so much better than store bought or even one made from a mix.

French Onion Dip with Vidalia Onions

I began experimenting with this onion dip after contemplating French Onion Soup, another recipe I intend to add to this blog. Our middle daughter loves French Onion Soup, but she doesn’t care for onions! Not even Vidalia onions. Strange, I know.

I prefer cooking with sweet onions–or Vidalia onions, as they are the one type of onion that doesn’t make my eyes sting so badly that I cry. So, I almost always cook with them. Do onions bother you?

As for whether our daughter will like this dip, I don’t know, as my husband and I finished it off before she had a chance to taste it! But I’ll report back here once she tries it, if you’re interested.

Instructions For Making This Recipe

Gather the ingredients so you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.

Prepare the Ingredients

Using a sharp knife and cutting board, thinly slice the sweet onions.

I opted to leave the onions in slices, but if you want, you may chop them into smaller pieces.

Mince a clove of garlic. Heat butter in a medium to large skillet on medium heat.

Cook the Onions

Add the sliced onion to the melted butter and sauté, stirring often until the onions turn golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes on low.

Assemble the Onion Dip

In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Mix to combine. Season the dip with smoked paprika, garlic salt, seasoned salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Stir together until incorporated.

Add the browned onion to the dip mixture. Using a spatula, stir until the onion is fully incorporated. Transfer the dip to a pretty serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

Serve French Onion Dip with your favorite potato chips. I like them with a plain ruffled chip, such as Lays. Refrigerate dip in a tightly covered container for up to 5 days. This dip is also really good as a condiment for baked potatoes.
