Gather your ingredients so that everything is close at hand on the counter or table.
Prepare the Ingredients
Using a Chef's knife and cutting board, chop the onion.
Mince the garlic.
Brown the Meat
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. (If necessary, drain off excess grease.) Once the meat has browned, stir in the chopped onion and minced garlic. Continue cooking until onion is translucent, 2-3 minutes.
Stir in the garlic powder, onion salt, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
Make the Stroganoff
Add cream of mushroom soup to the meat mixture and mix to combine.
Stir in 2 cans of water (2 cups) along with the egg noodles. You want enough water to cover the noodles. As this cooks, the water will turn into a yummy gravy.
Cook on medium-low heat until the noodles are tender, approximately 10-12 minutes, depending on the size of noodles used. Add more water as needed, up to another soup can.
When noodles are tender, add cream cheese and sour cream. Continue simmering and stir until smooth and creamy, 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and keep warm until ready to serve.
If desired, serve over mashed potatoes. Serves 4-6.
