This recipe for Orange Cream Scones with Currants is an adaptation of my English Scone recipe that is very similar, and yet I have been turning to this recipe more and more this past year. My daughters love the light orange flavor, and I do …
Enjoy Orange Cranberry Scones with a warm cup of tea in the morning or afternoon. This was the first scone recipe I ever made. The chopped cranberries and orange zest give them a wonderful warm flavor of Christmas.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Gather your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand. Using a food processor, chop the cranberries into small pieces. Zest an orange.
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, orange zest, baking powder, kosher salt, and baking soda.
Sometimes it’s just easier to use your fingers.
Using a blending fork or your fingers, cut in butter until coarse crumbs form. Add chopped cranberries, orange juice, whole milk, and one large egg.
Knead 6-8 times on a floured surface. Pat out and cut out rounds of dough using a biscuit cutter for more traditional shaped scones.
Another option is to pat the dough into a circle and cut it into 8 wedges. Place scones in a scone pan that has been sprayed with baking spray.
If you don’t have a scone pan, you may use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, or even a round cake pan. Make sure the scones do not touch each other on the pan.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.
While the scones are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, combine powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth. Drizzle over warm scones.
This recipe will make 8 scones. Perfect for a holiday tea party.
