Red Wine Sangria

Sangria is summer and this Red Wine Sangria is perfect for your next summer gathering. Dark red cherries, limes, and lemons, soaked in your favorite red wine, then splashed with ginger ale over ice.
For those of you out there who might think Sangria is just for girls, this is not a girly drink! It’s lightly sweetened, but mostly, it is just refreshing and delicious. And very pretty.
What You Need to Make Red Wine Sangria
- dark red cherries
- 2 bottles of your favorite dry red wine
- Barcardi Rum Pineapple Fusion
- grenadine syrup
- ginger ale
Tips on Making Sangria

Sangria is basically fruit + wine + ginger ale. All soaked together to form this really yummy refreshing drink for summer!
You can use any fresh fruit that you desire. I’ve seen recipes for many different versions such as watermelon or apples or kiwi, even. When I happened to be making this sangria, red cherries were in season, so I used that with lemon and limes. You can never go wrong with lemon and lime.
When it comes to adding in the wine, pick a good drinking wine. A dry wine. Not sweet. One of your favorites. Some recipes use Pinot Noir, but honestly, I lOVE my Pinot Noir, so I’m not going to use it in a flavored sangria! For this recipe, I mixed a Zinfandel and a Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ve also used a rose, and while it was okay, I prefer the red wine blend.
For the sweetener some folks add in a simple syrup, or in my case, I used grenadine. I’ve also used the juice from Maraschino Cherries.
Often, you’ll find recipes that have added spirits–such as rum or brandy. In this recipe, I’ve used Barcardi’s Pineapple Fusion (simply because I had some in my pantry.) But I’ve also used dark rum, and I like the idea of using brandy.
Putting it all Together
Place prepared fruit in a large pretty pitcher. I have a pitcher especially made for sangria that holds in the fruit as it’s being poured. It’s made by Pfaltzgraff, and is the Villa della Luna design. But you could also use a clear pitcher, which would show off the fruits in a pretty way.
Pour the bottled wine over the cherries, limes and lemons. Stir in the extra spirits and syrup. Allow to chill and soak for 1-2 hours so that all the fruits have blended with the liquids.
Before serving, add the ginger ale to the pitcher, adding as little or as much as your taste prefers. Then pour into ice-filled glasses with a piece or two of the fruit as a garnish. Yes, you can eat the fruit. It’s delicious! This recipe will serve 8-10.

Red Wine Sangria
- 2 cups dark red cherries pitted and halved
- 3 large limes sliced
- 2 large lemons sliced
- 1 bottle Zinfandel wine
- 1 bottle Cabernet Sauvignon wine
- 1/3 cup Barcardi Rum Pineapple Fusion
- 1/4 cup grenadine syrup
- 6-8 cups ginger ale
- Using a cherry pitter or the end of a vegetable peeler, pit fresh cherries and slice them in half. Thinly slice limes and lemons. Place prepared fruit in a large pitcher.
- Pour wine over cherries, limes, and lemons. Stir in pineapple fusion rum and grenadine syrup. Allow to chill for 1-2 hours.
- Before serving, add ginger ale to taste and pour into ice-filled glasses. Serves 8-10.
