Cooking the Noodles for Hamburger Stroganoff

(Post modified on 9/23/23.)

This recipe reminds me of the easy Stove Top dinners that come in a box. Only so much better. And really, it’s just as easy. I always try to keep a few canned creamed soups in my pantry as well as dried egg noodles, for such a time as this–ie: when I don’t feel like cooking.

Our grandchildren love this dish and often request it when they spend the night with us. There’s nothing better than watching youngsters gobble up the food on their plate when it’s served to them. And that’s exactly what happens when I serve this Hamburger Stroganoff.

Ingredients for Simple Hamburger Stroganoff

(See the full recipe at the bottom of this post.)

  • lean ground burger
  • sweet onion
  • clove garlic
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • dried egg noodles
  • water
  • cream cheese
  • sour cream

Instructions for Making this Recipe

Gather your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.

Mince the onion using a chef’s knife and cutting board. Mince the garlic.

If desired, you may use instead 2 tablespoons dried minced onion. Also, feel free to use 1 tablespoon of canned minced garlic.

In a large skillet, brown hamburger. I like to use a lean burger with at least 80/20. Once the meat has browned, stir in the prepared minced onion, garlic powder, onion salt, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.

Add Egg Noodles to the Meat Sauce

Add cream of mushroom soup and mix well. Stir in egg noodles and add water as needed, 1 can at a time. You want the water to just barely cover the noodles. As it cooks, the water will turn into a nice, lovely gravy.

I like to use Amish Homestyle Egg Noodles for this recipe. They are the next-to-best thing to making your own. Choose medium to wide.

Cover and cook on low heat until noodles are tender, approximately 8-12 minutes (depending on what noodles you use). Add more water as needed, up to one more soup can. Stir frequently to prevent noodles from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Adding Sour Cream and Cream Cheese to the Dish

Right before serving, add in the cream cheese and sour cream. Stir until smooth and creamy.

This recipe will serve 4-6 people.

This Recipe Pleases All Ages–Young and Old

As mentioned above, our grandchildren love this dish, just as much or more than our children did when they were young. So, this recipe pleases all ages, from young to old.

    1. Hi Ashley, If your browned burger is very greasy, then yes, feel free to drain it off as desired. I always try to use lean burger, so normally, that is not a problem. Thanks for asking.

Directions say to add minced garlic, but that is the ONLY mention of minced garlic; it’s not on the list of ingredients, but just suddenly appears in the directions. Also, why oh why would one serve a noodle-based dish “over mashed potatoes”? Apart from those nit-picky things, I love this easy, delicious recipe!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Bethany. We love this dish over mashed potatoes. Give it a try…I dare you. 🙂

    1. Hi Shannon, I’m so glad that you and your family loved the recipe! May you be blessed this holiday season!

My husband just devoured two helpings of this recipe and both of my picky girls ate it without complaint. So win- win in my house.
We had left over hamburgers from a BBQ over the weekend that I used for the meat. I also used heavy cream and water for the noodles to cook in but followed the ingredient list on everything else. I just had about a cup of cream that was left over from another recipe which is why I substituted. This dish is going into my recipe book as a favorite!! Thank you!
P.S. This was the fourth beef stroganoff recipe I’ve tried and my family didn’t like the others.

    1. Hi Jenn, I’m delighted that you gave this recipe a try. And yes, it’s good that you opted for ingredients from your fridge in this recipe. I do that, too. Use what you have and that needs used. Our grandkids love this easy dish. I’m glad it worked for your family! Thanks for sharing your experience with me!
