Frito Snack Mix is a great recipe to make with children, and a yummy after-school snack for “kids” of all ages to enjoy. Mixing sweet and savory flavors, it satisfies the pickiest of eaters and receives a thumbs up from our granddaughter, who helped make this mix.

Serving Frito Snack Mix in Polish Pottery Bowl

This fun snack comes together quickly, and will teach youngsters measuring and baking skills, as well as develop their ability to cook on a stove top.

For this recipe you’ll need a large roasting pan, a long-handled wooden spoon, and a medium saucepan.

 

Ingredients for Frito Snack Mix

  • Fritos corn chip
  • Chex wheat cereal
  • pretzel twists or sticks
  • mix nuts
  • M&M chocolate candies

Candy Coating

  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • light corn syrup

 

Instructions for Making this Recipe

Snack Ingredients for this Recipe

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Gather your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table. Coat two baking sheets with butter or baking spray. Set aside. 

 

Combine the Snack Mix Ingredients

Mix Together the Snack Ingredients

In a large roasting pan, combine the Fritos corn chips, the Chex wheat cereal, pretzels, and mix nuts. Set aside.

 

Make the Candy Coating

In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup. Cook over medium heat until butter melts, stirring to combine.

Bring Candy Coating to Softball Stage

Bring the mixture to a boil, and boil for 4 minutes, without stirring.

The sugar coating will reach softball stage with a temperature of 235-240 degrees. 

Remove from heat and pour the coating over the Frito mixture. Stir with a long-handled wooden spoon to evenly coat.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Stir mixture and bake an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven and stir the mixture once more.

Spread Snack Mixture onto Prepared Baking Sheets

Transfer the hot mixture to the prepared baking sheets. Allow to cool completely, for about 20-30 minutes. Break into small pieces and sprinkle the mixture with coated chocolate candies.

Store in a freezer bag or an airtight container for up to 3 weeks. This recipe will make approximately 15 cups and will serve 25 people. Be sure to serve it in a pretty bowl, like this Polish Pottery bowl.
