Try Grilled Chicken with Chili Sauce the next time you want to grill. This is a quick and easy recipe, perfect for weeknight meals.
(Post modified on 8/11/23.)
The chili sauce marinade is easy to mix up. Garlic, Lemon Zest, Olive Oil, and Chili Sauce. Dip the chicken in the sauce and let it marinate for 15 minutes while your charcoal grill is heating.
You may use either bone-in or boneless chicken thighs for this recipe, but allow a few extra minutes if using bone-in chicken.

Ingredients for Grilled Chicken with Chili Sauce
(See the full recipe at the bottom of this post.)
- garlic cloves
- chili sauce
- extra-virgin olive oil
- grated lemon zest
- kosher salt
- freshly ground black pepper
- skinless boneless chicken thighs
Instructions for Making This Recipe
Gather your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table. Prepare your ingredients. Using a knife a cutting board, mince the cloves of garlic. With a fine-edge grater, zest a lemon.
Making the Chili Sauce Marinade
In a large bowl, combine the minced garlic, chili sauce, extra-virgin olive oil, freshly grated lemon zest, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk until mixed well.
If you don’t have chili sauce in the cupboard, you can make your own, which I find myself doing more often than not. This homemade sauce works well for many recipes. Simply use the needed amount and refrigerate the unused portion in a covered container. See my Homemade Chili Sauce Recipe Here.
Add chicken thighs and stir to coat. Allow to marinate for 10-15 minutes.
I like using chicken thighs (especially skinless and boneless). They are so flavorful and juicy. And because there is no bone, they cook faster. Be sure to cook them until their internal temperature reaches 175.
While the chicken marinates, prepare a gas or charcoal grill for cooking.
Place the chicken thighs on the hot grill. Grill the chicken, flipping once or twice until cooked through (175 degrees) for about 17-20 minutes total. Brush with chili sauce as desired during cooking.Â
If you’re using bone-in chicken thighs, cook 20-25 minutes until juices run clear and internal temperature reaches 175 degrees.Â
Serve Grilled Chicken with Chili Sauce with Baked Parmesan Fries, Easy Macaroni and Cheese, or Corn and Black Bean Salad.
This recipe will serve 4-6 people.
