Flour Tortillas

Flour Tortillas

Our middle daughter loved making Flour Tortillas when she was in 4-H. In fact, it was the first bread-making recipe that she entered at our county fair.

Here’s a recipe you can make for your family that will rival store-bought flour tortillas . . . with just a little effort. They’re actually so easy to make, you may never buy more, ever again.

A Little Backstory

You see, our daughter Maggie was obsessed with Josefina, an American Girl doll she received for Christmas when she was seven years old. She did everything with this doll. Played with it for hours upon hours. The doll went everywhere with her.

Josefina Cookbook

When Maggie joined 4-H, Josefina was there with her, learning how to sew, how to cook. She even had a Josefina Cookbook. You get the idea. It was no surprise to me, when Maggie decided she wanted to learn how to make flour tortillas for her 4-H cooking project. After all, Josefina ate tortillas.

That summer, she entered a 4-H table display competition. And you guessed it. She entered a “Mexican-themed” table. She had a Mexican blanket for her tablecloth, a Mexican sombrero as a decoration, and she dressed up in one of her matching outfits with Josefina as her dinner guest. It was adorable.

I highly recommend feeding your children’s imagination with creative play.

Making Homemade Flour Tortillas at Home

Heat a cast iron griddle to medium-high heat. (Test temperature by sprinkling water on griddle. If it sizzles, it’s ready.) Cook tortillas on each side for 30 seconds, tamping down air bubbles as needed. Remove from griddle when brown spots appear and cover with a towel to keep warm or place in a terracotta tortilla warmer.

Serve immediately in your favorite Mexican recipe. Store extras in seal-tight container. This recipe will make 12 tortillas.

Sirloin Steak Marinade is a recipe we have been enjoying for many years.  Of course, it’s perfect for sirloin steak, but we’ve been known to put it on other types of steak as well. Even KC Strips–although many people would frown on such an idea.
