I worked long and hard on this Classic Italian Stromboli to get it “just” right. I’m happy to report that this one pleased our family perfectly. Tender, sweet crust. Creamy herb and garlic sauce. Cheese. Pepperoni. Canadian Bacon. More Cheese. So Yummy!
Our family loves pizza, whether it’s thin and crispy, pan, artisan, or even dessert. When we tried stromboli from our local gas station’s Simple Simon’s Pizza, I knew I had to try making my own. This recipe probably took me 3 or 4 attempts, but we love the final result. Never be afraid to try something new!
When testing this recipe, some of things I worked on were the creamy white sauce. I wanted it to be tangy with lots of herbs. For the meats, I started with just pepperoni, but thought it needed more. Our youngest daughter thinks it ought to have browned sausage, but I wanted the preparation for this stromboli to be relatively simple, so stuck with processed meats. I also tried using shredded cheese. The sliced cheese offered a more gooey finish to the stromboli when sliced, which was the result I desired.

Instructions for Making This Recipe
Preheat oven to 400°F. Gather your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.
Make the Dough
You’ll want to begin by making the dough. This is easy if you use a mixer with a kneading hook. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, granulated sugar, and kosher salt. Add in the warm water and olive oil. Mix well.
Knead by machine or by hand on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and allow to rise for 30-40 minutes.
Prepare the Ingredients
While the dough is rising, prepare the ingredients. Using a Chef’s knife and cutting board, mince the sweet onion. Dice the bell pepper. Slice the black olives.
Slice the Provolone, Swiss, and Mozzarella cheese.
Grate the Parmesan cheese.
Prepare the white sauce by mixing together the mayonnaise, creamy Italian dressing, minced garlic, and Italian seasoning in a small bowl.
Assemble the Stromboli
When you’re ready to assemble the stromboli, punch down the risen dough and place on a lightly floured surface. Lightly roll into a 12″ x 15″ rectangle.
I had a helper with me when I prepared the stromboli. Children love to get in there and help with baking and cooking projects. This recipe is perfect for little hands, especially when it comes to assembling the toppings!
Spread the creamy sauce mixture down center of dough, about 4″ wide. Sprinkle with prepared sweet onion, bell peppers, and black olives.
Layer over that the Canadian bacon and pepperoni. Then top with sliced of cheese.
Gently fold sides of dough up and over to lap, with one side overlapping the other. Pinch seams together and fold ends of dough to seal.
Place a sheet of parchment paper beside the Stromboli and carefully turn it over so the seam is on the bottom and the Stromboli is centered on the parchment paper.
Using kitchen shears or a knife, slice the top a few times to make breathing holes. Brush the top with egg and sprinkle with Parmesan and dried parsley.
Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Let stand at least 10 minutes before slicing.
I hope you will enjoy Classic Italian Stromboli as much as we do! This recipe will serve 4-6 people.
