This Apple Pie with Crumb Topping is a mix between a Dutch Apple Pie and an Apple Crisp. Tart apples in a sweetly spiced filling, topped with a crunchy oat crumb.

What is a Dutch Apple Pie?

A Dutch Apple Pie has a sweet streusel crumb topping that consists of sugar, butter, and flour. Sometimes this will also include chopped nuts. This recipe switches out the nuts for old-fashioned oats.

My husband loves this recipe, but he has a big sweet tooth. Top this pie with some freshly whipped cream or ice-cream for a delicious dessert to serve your guests. A perfect autumn dessert!

Ingredients to Make Apple Pie with Crumb Topping

  • apples (tart apples such as Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or Jonagold work well.)
  • all-purpose flour
  • old-fashioned oats
  • vegetable shortening
  • butter
  • sugar
  • brown sugar
  • water
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • salt

Instructions for Making This Recipe

To begin, preheat oven to 425 degrees. Using a paring knife, peel, core and slice the apples.

In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine apple slices, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until mixed well. Heat in microwave for 7-10 minutes until apples start to soften. Set aside while you prepare the pie pastry.

In a medium sized bowl, mix together flour and salt. Add shortening and cut in with a pastry fork until crumbly. Add 1/8 cup water and mix, then add the rest of the water to finish mixing the dough. Dough should hold together in a ball.

Roll dough out on floured surface the size of your pie plate. Place in pie plate and crimp edges of pie. Add apple mixture on top of the unbaked crust.

Use Your Fingers to Incorporate the Butter

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, and cinnamon. With a pastry fork or your fingers, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. I actually like to use my fingers for this part as I am able to incorporate the butter better that way. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apple filling.

Place the pie plate on the second lowest rack in your oven and bake for 15 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes until top is golden brown, using aluminum foil if necessary to prevent edges from getting too dark.

Oat Streusel Dutch Apple Pie

Remove from oven, and allow to cool on a wire rack.

To serve, drizzle caramel over the top of the pie as desired and serve with freshly whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This recipe will serve 8 people.
