Sourdough Recipes - Tangy Sourdough Bread

(Post modified on 9/12/22.)

Start with freshly sliced Tangy Sourdough Bread, coated in a Parmesan butter. Fill the sandwiches with one or a combination of Havarti, Gouda, or Provolone Cheese. Cook sandwiches on a hot griddle until both sides are a delightful, dark golden brown, with cheese oozing from the middle. Oh my! So good!

Ingredients for Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

(See full recipe at the bottom of this post.)

  • butter, softened
  • Parmesan cheese
  • dried parsley
  • sourdough bread
  • Havarti cheese, Provolone, or Gouda (or a combination of cheese)

Instructions for Making This Recipe

Gather all your ingredients so that you have everything close at hand on the counter or table.

Prepare the Parmesan Butter

Mixing the Butter and Parmesan Cheese Mixture

In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, Parmesan cheese and dried parsley.

Make the Sandwiches

Slice pieces of sourdough bread 1/4″- 3/8″ thick.

Spread Butter on One Side of Each Bread Slice

Spread prepared butter on one side of each piece of bread.

Cooking the Sandwiches on the Griddle

Place 2-4 bread slices, butter-side down on a preheated griddle. Add approximately 1 1/2 ounces of sliced cheese to each piece of bread.

Cheese Selections for the Sandwiches

For this recipe I have paired a soft and hard Havarti cheese on the sandwiches, and also Provolone and Gouda Cheese. Both ways are quite delicious.

Place Pesto in a Small Bowl

If you want to take this recipe a step further, try lightly spreading a homemade pesto on the cheese before closing the sandwich. Oh my!

Top with remaining pieces of bread, butter-side up.

Grill until one side is lightly brown.

Turn with a spatula and grill the other side until golden brown and cheese has started to melt along the edges.

Serving Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

If desired, cut sandwiches in half with a sharp knife before serving. Serve warm with your favorite soup, such as Homemade Tomato Soup with Tortellini.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Havarti

This recipe will make 4 large sandwiches.

Wine Recommendation – Your favorite Riesling, Pinot Noir or Merlot. If using the pesto suggestion above, you might try a Pinot Grigio.
